If you want to study in the U.S., you will need to apply for a student visa with an SEVP approved school like Tampa Language Center. Once you have your I-20 and acceptance letter, you will surely have to book an appointment at the nearest US embassy. You can know how how many days it'll take to get an appointment by visiting HERE!

Once you have a date selected on the calendar, the next step of the process is the visa interview. Here are some tips on how to prepare for the interview:

1. Bring all required documents to your interview. You will need:

  • Your passport
  • Your Form DS-160 (visa application form)
  • Your visa appointment confirmation
  • Your I-20 form (Make sure to sign and date the student attestation section!)
  • Proof of payment for the SEVIS fee (Pay HERE if you haven't! You can be denied if you don't!)
  • A visa photo that meets the U.S. requirements
  • Financial documents to show you can pay for your studies, like bank statements or scholarship letters
  • Your embassy will likely give you a list of documents before your interview, so please follow their list!

2. Prepare to Answer Questions

During the interview, you should know that the answer will be NO until you can prove that you have sufficent reason to return to your country and you can prove that point! The officer will ask you questions about your plans. Be ready to answer questions like:

  • Why do you want to study in the U.S.?
  • Why did you choose this specific school?
  • How will you pay for your education and living expenses?
  • What are your plans after graduation or completing the program?

Be honest and clear. The officer wants to know that you plan to return to your home country after your studies and it is your obligation to prove this when presenting your case! Many students report to us that there were not many questions asked to them at their interview. They may ask you 1 question and give you their decision which was made prior to your interview. Nonetheless, be prepared to answer any of the above questions and to truly prove that you WILL, return to your country upon completion of your studies! Anything that you can show that would make an embassy official believe that you would return to your country would be very important. Do you own a house, apartment, or other property? Is your job allowing you to study in the USA so you can get a promotion? Does your immediate family, especially your parents, all live in your country still? Do you or your family own a business that you are a part of, or that your education in the USA would help you with when you return? Be prepared to discuss this!

3. Practice Your English

The interview will usually be in English, so practice speaking clearly. You don’t need to speak perfectly, but try to be confident and understandable. If you don’t understand a question, it’s okay to ask the officer to repeat it. If you don't know English at all, they may give you the option to have your interview in your language. But again, it looks better that you have some background in English.

4. Be Honest and Confident

During the interview, stay calm and be yourself. The officer is there to help, and they want to see that you are a serious student who will follow the rules. Answer questions truthfully and with confidence. They often know your family's immigration history, if you have been talking to someone in the USA via social media, or if you have traveled to the USA before. Be honest and remember that you are applying for a non-immigrant visa, so your plans should be to return to your country at the end of your study period.

5. Dress Professionally

Dress neatly and professionally for the interview. This shows that you are taking the process seriously.

By preparing well, you can make your student visa interview go smoothly. Good luck with your application and your studies in the U.S.! Maybe wearing red, white, and blue would help too but don't go too overboard!

6. Be Prepared to Show Your Social Media Accounts

In 2025, there was an update in procedures for student visa interviews that may require you to give access to your social media accounts. They are looking for anti-American posts on your social media to try to keep people who don't like the U.S.A. out of the country. It is also possible that they will look into your relationship with people currently living in the USA.
